Physical Activities: Importance for Children

Kids this age need physical activity to build strength, coordination, and confidence — and to lay the groundwork for a healthy lifestyle. They're also gaining more control over how active they are.

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is an effective campaign to save the girl child and educate the girl child all over the India. It is a scheme run by the Government of India with the aim of spreading awareness as well as improving the efficiency of welfare services for the girls of India. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has started a Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (launched on 21st of January in 2015) under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana was launched to support this scheme as well as make it successful by meeting the essential expenses of the girl child such as health, higher education and marriage. 
This scheme is a good start for the girl child lives as it involves some effective efforts of the Government of India. It is a best scheme ever as it reduces the tension of parents as well as will save the lives of present and future born girls through this small investment on annual basis. This project was started with the initial amount of Rs. 100 crore. It is also reported that Ministry of Home Affairs will spent around Rs 150 crore over this scheme to assure women safety in large cities of India. This scheme has been planned and launched to reduce the level and effect of some dangerous social issues related to the girl child.
According to the census of 1991, the number of girl child (age group 0-6 years) in India was 945 per 1,000 boys. It was reduced to 927 girls/1,000 boys in 2001 and 918 girls/1,000 boys in 2011. Regarding this, India was ranked at 41st number country among 195 countries by the UNICEF in 2012. Such a huge level of decline in the number of girls was the indication of lack of women empowerment in the country. This huge reduction in girl child number was because of the pre-birth discrimination, gender biased sex selection, post birth gender inequality, crimes against women, etc social issues.
On the launch of this scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked to the public to eradicate female foeticide and follow the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme for the betterment of the girl child. This programme was launched by the PM on 22nd of January in 2015. It was first started from the Panipat, Haryana. The trend of ever declining child sex ratio in the country has given rise to the necessity of this programme. The objectives of this scheme are:
  • To ensure the survival, protection and higher education of the girl child.
  • To ensure empowerment of women through higher education and equal participation in all the working fields.
  • To prevent gender biased sex selective elimination of girl child.
  • To enhance the status of girl child all over India especially in the top 100 selected districts (low in CSR).
  • To bring Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Women and Child Development, and Ministry of Human Resource Development together to work conjointly for the welfare of girl child.

Empowering women in India is very necessary to bring gender equality or we can say that gender equality is very necessary to empower women. Our country is still a developing country and economic status of our country is very bad because it is a male dominated country. Men (means half power of the country) are walking alone and they forced women to do only household works. They do not know that women are the half power of this country and combining to male can form full power of the country. The day when full power of the country would start working, no other country would be more powerful than the India. Men are not know how powerful Indian women are.
It is very necessary for all Indian men to understand the power of women and let them go ahead to make themselves independent and power of the family and country. Gender equality is the first step to bring women empowerment in India. Men should not understand that women are made only to handle household chores or take responsibility of home and family. Instead, both (men and women) are responsible for everything of daily routine. Men too need to understand their responsibility of home and family and all other works women do so that women can get some time to think about themselves and their career. There are so many laws for empowering women however none are effective and followed by people. There should be some effective and tight laws which can be followed by everyone. It is not the responsibility of our government only, it is the responsibility of each and every Indian. Only rule can do nothing, it needs to understand the theme of rules, why rules are made, why women empowerment is so necessary for our country and other questions. It also would help in reducing poverty by improving health and productivity within families and communities as well as providing better chance to the next generation. There are many social issues making women backward in India such as gender based violence, reproductive health inequities, economic discrimination, harmful traditional practices, other pervasive and persistent forms of inequality.

Women are bearing enormous hardship from the ancient time in India. during and after humanitarian emergencies, especially armed conflicts. There are many private and government organisations and institutions supporting women empowerment, promoting policy making, promoting gender-sensitive data collection, improving women’s health awareness and expanding their independency in the life. Despite such supports and human rights, women are still dependent, poor, unhealthy and illiterate. We need to think the reasons behind and solve all on immediate basis.

History Of The Heritage School

It was in 1953 when Mr. J.J. Sookias and his wife, Mrs. M. Sookias started this school in Dehradun and called it, 'The Doon Cultural Centre'.

Rules and Regulations


A good instruction must have prescribed Rules and Regulations and must enforce these uniformly.
With this understanding we must ensure the following:
Simplicity and smartness being the key root to the institution, the following must be ensured:
  • Every student comes to school smartly and neatly dressed and in correct school uniform.
  • Boys will keep their hair short while girl will dress their hair tidily by tying the back, if it is long.
  • Black shoes (boots not allowed) are a part of the uniform. Shoes must be polished regularly. White shoes to be worn for P.T./Games.
  • No jewelry is allowed in school. Girls may wear simple and small ear-rings.
  • Nails must be cleaned and clipped short. Girl students must not apply henna on their hands.

B: Regularity and punctuality
  1. Our student must be 'On Time and Ready to Learn'. Hence, pupils must be regular and punctual. All to be in school before 8:00 A.M. in winter and before 7:30 A.M. in summer.
  2. Pupils who are habitually late for school are liable to be sent home.
  3. Parents must plan their holidays/excursions in such a way that school attendance is not effected. Also appointment with doctors, dentist. Etc. must not be arranged during school hours.
  4. Leave of absence will be granted only on a previously written application and only for very serious reasons.
  5. In case of absence without leave, the absence must be explained in writing and also entered in the School diary. The parent should sign it. Finally, the same must be signed by the Principal before the child is allowed into the class.
  6. Pupils suffering from any infectious disease like measles, chicken pox, mumps etc. will not be allowed to attend School unless the suggested quarantine period is over. Also they must bring an authorized M.B.B.S. Doctor's certificate to state that they are freefrom infection.
  7. ATTENDANCE ON NATIONAL DAYS IS COMPULSORY.
  8. Homework given should be done regularly.
  9. A ninety percent(90%) attendance is necessary for Promotion.
C: Discipline
The school environment has to be one of discipline and learning.
This demands that the following be kept in mind:
  • There is an atmosphere of order and silence in school, which is conductive to good leaner.
  • Especially outside the Principal's office, the staff rooms, the library and the corridors, there should be order and silence.

Smacking a child should be illegal

I firmly believe that the smacking of children should be banned by law. For me, there is no real debate in this matter. Many parents abuse the right to smack their children, which can lead to severe consequences. Children grow up copying and learning from their parents from a young age. If parents drink and smoke, their children may want to copy them. If parents smack, their children will think that it is acceptable to be violent and will be more likely to smack their own children in the future. Surely the main consideration in this case is that, if parents choose to smack their children they are damaging them, not always physically but definitely psychologically. 


In everyday life, violence doesn't need to be used to control children's behaviour. Most parents say that they use smacking as a way of controlling their children when they are disobedient. I believe smacking can affect children when they become adults in two ways. They could disagree with smacking their own children because they didn't like it, or they could agree with it because they like the control and authority it gives them. 



Twenty years ago, corporal punishment was banned in schools because some teachers were abusing the right to smack children. For years, parents have been abusing this right and the Government still hasn't banned it in the home. Since Sweden banned smacking 10 years ago, child deaths have been reduced to zero. In Britain, it runs at one child death per week. 



Most children's charities point out that hitting someone who is over the age of 18 could result in the assailant being in court for abuse, but hitting a child is perfectly legal. According to the law, it is illegal to beat an animal, even if it is a mild smack on the nose. The law is clearly stating that animals have more right to safety and protection than children do and that it is fine to chastise a child, but not an animal. Can we allow this absurd situation to continue? I personally believe that it is wrong to ban any violence against animals, but not children. 



There are still many parents who believe that the smacking of children should be allowed. To conclude all I have said in my argument, how could any parent want to inflict pain on their own child? The sense of hurt that a child must feel emotionally as well as physically must be unbearable because the person who is supposed to love them unconditionally, is inflicting abuse on them instead.

Gond Art Work Shop (Spic Macay)

"Art is an expression of ideas and imagination on paper through colors".
This is what the principal, teachers and students of The Heritage School experienced during this Gond Art workshop organised by Spic Macay. Mr. Gariba Singh Tekan and Mrs. Premi Bai were our teachers of the day. All students interested in the activity submitted their names to their class teachers. All the children assembled near the Jackfruit tree in our school campus and were really excited to participate in the Gond Art workshop. Our Principal Mrs. B. Gill was also very excited to learn about Gond Arts.


    Mr. Tekan taught us different techniques of holding the brush and using colors. He also told us that the Gond Arts of Madhya Pradesh is known as 'Gondi Bhatti Chitra'. It is a painting done on mud walls with natural colors. Mr. Tekan has taken an initiative to keep this form of art alive. All the students learnt this form of art with great enthusiasm. The children were inspired by the workshop.


                Mr. Tekan went to each and every child and taught them individually. This workshop lasted for three days. We requested our Principal to organize more such workshops in the future. It was a great experience which made us learn something different.

Puppet Show by Spic Macay

Spic Macay (Society for the promotion of Art and Culture amongst youth) organised a puppet show in our school campus. The renowned puppeteers Ms. Valeria Bianchi and Ms. Angela Malvasi came all the way from Rome to The Heritage School to showcase their talent with Table Puppets. This was the first time when Spic Macay gave the students the opportunity to see a Table Puppet show, live.


        The puppet show comprised of Nonso and Nonsa two paper Table Puppets faced with simple problems and conflicts. They lived in a world of antique objects and they tried to understand how existence works. The beautiful show consisted of short and poetic sketches, full of delicate comic scenes, typical of silent movies of 1900. The sketches were accompanied by music and punctuated by explanatory signs.


      The show was very enjoyable. Everyone present was very impressed by such a piece of art. Ms. Valeria and Ms. Angela even told the students how those Table Puppets were made.

               The students also got a chance to see a Press-Conference live. There were reporters from various newspapers and news channels to ask questions from the Artists. At the end a token of appreciation was given to the artists by our principal. Everyone enjoyed the puppet show immensely.

Christmas Celebration

On December, all  Heritagians celebrated Christmas with hearts full of  joy and spirit of peace and goodwill.


  Classes IV and V put up 'The Nativity'. This was an occasion of music and melody at each corner. Everybody sang Christmas carols 'Silent Night', 'Go Tell It On The Mountains' and 'Jingle Bells' echoed in the campus.


To add to the joy of the celebration we had Santa Claus make his appearance, distributing sweets. Students of all the classes enjoyed the carnival which followed. We had catered for delicious eats, ice-creams and games.

          Later children were seen dancing to hit numbers played by the 'Request Corner', and arranged by our twelthies.

Once the music stopped everybody returned to their classes, we had an awesome celebration of our festival !

RESPONSIVE CLASSROOM - IT BEGINS WITH THE MORNING MEETING

In a classroom, a strong community is fundamental.
The children are expected to work well together, openly share their ideas, and take academic risks in order to grow and learn as an individual and student. But how does one successfully build this sense of community? Simply stated - the Morning Meeting.
The Morning Meeting has four essential parts: the greeting, share, the activity, and the morning message. To begin the meeting, children properly greet one another using eye contact, a pleasant voice, and a firm handshake. Commencing the meeting with a greeting gives a sense of belonging to each student which is an essential component when working on building a solid community.
During the share, children are encouraged to listen as another student shares an important story or event in their life. Likewise, the children are asked to respond with a comment or a question regarding that particular student’s share. Often times, children want to reply with a similar activity they too have experienced, rather than responding to the speaker’s share. Thus listening to one another begins in the circle every morning. With this daily activity, the students are learning about their peers while they are gaining invaluable communication skills that will hopefully last a lifetime.
Another facet of the Morning Meeting is the activity. Taking part in the activity is crucial. When children do so, they are unassumingly taking risks they would not normally take in an academic setting. Participating in an unfamiliar game or being the leader of an activity can be intimidating to many youngsters, and as educators, it is important to teach children how to overcome these feelings in a safe and nurturing environment. With gentle guidance and support from their peers and teacher, children eventually learn that taking a risk can result in a positive outcome, building self confidence. As a result, children become comfortable with their environment and genuine learning in an academic setting takes place.
The final component of the meeting is the morning message. The message can set the stage for the learning that lies ahead, or it can be used to review previously learned information. Either way, their minds are reflecting upon the material and the children are engaged early in the day, anticipating the day’s lesson. 
The components of this daily gathering work simultaneously allowing each individual to thrive. It begins in the Morning Meeting - where effective learning takes place, listening is appreciated and valued by all.

Earth Day

We are now entering the 46th year of a movement that continues to inspire, challenge ideas, ignite passion, and motivate people to action.
In 1970, the year of our first Earth Day, the movement gave voice to an emerging consciousness, channeling human energy toward environmental issues. Forty-six years later, we continue to lead with groundbreaking ideas and by the power of our example.
And so it begins. Today. Right here and right now. Earth Day is more than just a single day — April 22, 2016. It’s bigger than attending a rally and taking a stand.
This day is every year celebrated in our school with lots of joy. Charts were put up in small galleries and auditoriums showing the poor condition of the earth. Some of the charts depicted various methods for the prevention of pollution. Each and every child contributed to make this day a memorable one. They also showed the three ways in which we can prevent the pollution. These were 'Reuse', 'Reduce' and 'Recycle'. Our Principal, Mrs B. Gill planted saplings of Ashoka tree in the school campus.
This Earth Day and beyond, let’s make big stuff happen. Let’s plant 7.8 billion trees for the Earth. Let’s divest from fossil fuels and make cities 100% renewable. Let’s take the momentum from the Paris Climate Summit and build on it.
Let’s start now. And let’s not stop.
